Structural timber: KVH, BSH, and laminated timber for sturdy projects

16. April 2026
Many wood projects start with a sketch and end with a very practical question: will this really hold up? Whether it’s a carport, garden shed, shelter, roof structure, or interior fit-out with a load-bearing framework—when it comes to load-bearing components, it’s worth choosing structurally suitable products such as solid structural timber (KVH) or glued laminated timber (BSH). They are dimensionally stable, predictable, and designed for load-bearing structures.

KVH is ideal for frames, posts, and beams when straight edges and reliable quality are required. BSH demonstrates its strength in larger spans, such as in beams that must not sag. Laminated wood panels, on the other hand, are strong when surfaces need to remain stable and visually uniform, such as in stairs, tables, or sturdy shelves.

In addition to the type of wood, moisture content is crucial. Wood that is too damp can shrink, while wood that is too dry can be damaged if stored improperly. That is why proper storage, protection from splashing water, clearance from the ground, and careful planning of connections (metal connectors, post supports, brackets, screws) are essential. Choosing the right structural lumber ensures not only a stable structure—it builds with confidence.
