PRM Bathroom: All Solutions for Optimal Accessibility

9. May 2025
The Bringhen Group can help you design an accessible bathroom for people with reduced mobility.

Designing an accessible bathroom for people with reduced mobility (PRM) is now a priority to ensure autonomy, safety, and comfort for everyone. At Bringhen Group, we support you in the design and realization of adapted bathrooms, respecting standards and offering aesthetic and functional solutions.

Optimal Accessibility and Circulation
Access to the bathroom should be facilitated by a wide door (at least 90 cm) with no threshold, allowing the passage of a wheelchair or walker. A maneuvering space of at least 1.50 m in diameter is essential to ensure safe movement and turning. The floor must be flat and non-slip, without thick rugs or bulky objects, to avoid any risk of falling.

Adapted Showers and Bathtubs
A walk-in, level-access shower is the ideal solution: without steps, it provides direct and secure access. It should offer a minimum space of 1.20 m x 0.90 m, be equipped with a folding or fixed seat, grab bars, and accessible taps with a long lever or automatic activation. For those who prefer a bathtub, there are models with a side door, transfer platform, grab bar, and non-slip mat to maximize safety.

Washbasins, Furniture, and Accessories
A wall-mounted washbasin, installed at a height between 70 and 85 cm, with clear space underneath (60 cm wide and 30 cm deep), allows comfortable use from a wheelchair. Furniture should be at an appropriate height, with accessible storage and rolling units to free up space under the basin. Taps should be easy to operate with one hand, and accessories (towel racks, tilting mirror, switches) should be within easy reach.

Toilets and Safety
Toilets should be raised (between 45 and 50 cm), with enough lateral clearance to allow side transfers, and equipped with fixed or foldable grab bars to facilitate movement. The entire bathroom should prioritize safety: grab bars, non-slip mats or slatted floors, removal of unnecessary obstacles, and organized space for smooth circulation.

Design and Integration
Accessibility should not come at the expense of aesthetics. Today’s PRM solutions combine design, quality materials, and perfect integration into all bathroom styles, creating a pleasant space suitable for the whole family.
